[Polity] Joint Parliament Committee

The JPC is one of the highest ranking parliamentary bodies which has twice the number of members from Lok Sabha as compared to the Rajya Sabha. It is empowered to obtain the evidence of experts, public bodies, associations, individuals or interested parties “suo motu” or on request.
The JPC and PAC base their reports on oral and written evidence from witnesses and call for documents in connection with a matter under its consideration. Its proceedings are confidential and all witnesses depose under oath. India has seen six JPCs so far – Bofors -1987Harshad Mehta scandal -1992, Stock market scam – 2001Pesticides in soft drinks – 20032G scam in 2011 and the AgustaWestland helicopters bribe scandal JPC announced on February 27, 2013.
